September 10, 2019
MKC hosted its sixth annual Legislative Day on Thursday, September 5 with 19 guests from four congressional offices in attendance. The Legislative Day is one aspect of MKC’s work to educate Kansas’s Congressional Delegation and staffers on the pressing issues affecting our industry and to strengthen the relationship between the co-op and legislative staff members.

“The day is designed to build relationships with our congressional delegation and state legislators, as well as advocating on behalf of our member owners,” says Dave Spears, executive vice president and CMO, MKC. “Besides highlighting and providing a profile of MKC, we also have the opportunity to engage in discussion on issues of importance to MKC and our member-owners. Another objective is to be a resource to our congressional delegation and staff. If an issue arises, and they need input, they will look to MKC for guidance.”

Other MKC and TMA staff joined the conversation to discuss industry topics important to Kansas agriculture, including crop insurance, immigration and more. In the afternoon, staff members toured the Canton Terminal and the Groveland location. A highlight of the event was the opportunity to watch soybeans being loaded to railcars at the Producer Ag, LLC. Terminal in Canton.

“The annual MKC Legislative Day allows us to learn about the work the co-op is performing on behalf of their members and provides an opportunity to discuss issues Kansas producers are currently facing,” says Judd Gardner, agriculture legislative assistant for Senator Jerry Moran. “I appreciate the opportunity to tour MKC’s facilities and will use the information provided during this year’s event to assist Senator Moran’s efforts on behalf of Kansas farmers and ranchers.”IMG_5941.jpg

Representative Stephen Owens of District 74 says, “Spending the day at MKC was not only enlightening but inspirational as well. MKC empowers farmers by surrounding them with products, services and resources in a cohesive, board room approach to ensure they are positioned to be as successful as possible. Never have I seen such a customer-focused organization dedicated to those that feed America. I’m grateful for the work they do and the investment they continue to make in Kansas, in America and our farmers.”

Staff members in attendance were Gardner; Mel Thompson, state agricultural representative for Senator Pat Roberts; Michael Brooks, legislative director for Congressman Roger Marshall; Debbie Luper, district director for Congressman Ron Estes; Roger Erickson, deputy district director for Congressman Ron Estes; and 12 of Roger Marshall’s staff members.
