Together We Can Fight Hunger

April 25, 2016
One in every seven families struggle with food insecurity in Kansas according to the Kansas Food Bank and Feeding America. To help combat hunger across Kansas, MKC is calling upon employees, customers, vendors and members of the local communities to help in the efforts of collecting donations in the fifth annual food drive to benefit local food banks.

During the month of April, the MKC Community Involvement Committee hosts a food drive to benefit local food banks. Employees band together to stop the spread of food insecurity in their communities and fill the shelves of local food banks. In addition to donations, MKC relies on the help of their local community to assist in the collection of food items as well.

“We want to help everybody we possibly can. This is the main goal of the food drive,” said Molly Park, Lindsborg billing specialist and member of the MKC Community Involvement Committee. Everybody thinks about food drives during the holidays, but not many people think about it this time of the year. It is important as schools get out for the summer, food banks have enough food to supplement the food families need at home.”

This year, the MKC Community Involvement Committee challenged the company to gather 10,000 pounds of food which equals approximately 10 pounds per employee. The past couple of years, the company has gathered around 6,000 pounds, and while that is an impressive number, the Community Involvement Committee wanted to dare people to do more.

The food collected at each MKC location will be distributed to local food banks within our territory. The” food drive ends on April 30, so make sure to have your food to the location by then,” Park says. “To collect more food, encourage members of the community to join by bringing in food supplies as well.” Together, MKC can fight hunger in the local communities.
