MKC Prepares Employees for Success

MOUNDRIDGE — Although many know Mid Kansas Cooperative for their top-quality grain services to the farming industry, many might not consider the time and resources it takes to maintain professional development for all their employees.

Around 230 employees from all MKC locations receive monthly training, along with team meetings at each location once a month and daily tailgate safety talks every day — before employees even begin their work day.

MKC focuses on four keys to success: safety, courtesy, image and innovation.

“Teams get together and ask, ‘What are our challenges today and talk about what they’re going to do today.’ We have employees who have been doing this for 20 years, 10 years or less than a year, but every day we have to remind our employees to block out, just like coaches block out for their basketball teams. The daily safety talk is probably the most important thing we do,” said Nathan Eck, Director of Central Operations.

Employees play a large role in the growth and success of MKC, and in return, training and professional development meetings are very important to the company.

“It is really important to MKC to invest in our team to help them continue to grow and learn. We provide training on a regular basis. We value our employees so we invest in those opportunities for them to grow in their fields of expertise, to learn about the industry and to grow within the company,” said Anne Anderton Warren, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer. “This will prepare them for maybe the next possible promotion, and we really focus on continuous education. All of this is a top priority for our company, and we feel it makes us better every day.”

While training and professional development are key aspects employees learn, communication between customers, other employees and farmers is fundamental to how employees interact with everyone.

“It is helpful especially in a management role. You have to be a good communicator because it helps ensure clear directions and sets up the company for success. Communication is the key to management success and it helps with all other management skills. If you’re a good communicator, other things will follow,” Warren added.

Along with focusing on training sessions, employees and managers are offered professional development events such as the Dale Carnegie event, Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership or KARL, the Land O’ Lakes Executive Agribusiness Program or LEAP and several mentor programs within the company.

“To me, it’s pretty simple: the biggest asset you have is your employees, and I think that shows through our success as a company and our ability to attract talented people,” Eck noted. “MKC helped me train to be able what I do today.”
