MKC Hosts Legislative Staff DayMKC hosted their third annual Legislative Staff Day on Wednesday, September 7 with four guests from three congressional offices in attendance. Staffers from the offices of Senator Jerry Moran, Senator Pat Roberts, including a member of the Senate Agricultural Committee staff and Congressman Tim Huelskamp were in attendance.

To kick-off, Dave Spears, senior vice president and CMO, MKC, led a presentation on the cooperatives profile, employee and leadership development, customer focus and more. Other MKC and TMA employees joined the conversation to discuss some of the top federal issues facing the cooperative including the Food Safety Modernization Act, biotech labeling and more. Staff members concluded the event by touring the Canton Terminal discussing topics like train logistics, ground storage and federal grain inspections.

“We greatly appreciate the role staff members play for their congressional offices,” Spears said. “This is a group Kansans’ rely on to take our message to legislatures.”

The Legislative Staff Day is one aspect of MKC’s work to educate Kansas’s Congressional Delegation and staffers on the pressing issues affecting our industry and to strengthen the relationship between the co-op and legislative staff members.

“It is always a pleasure to attend MKC’s Legislative Staff Day,” says Mel Thompson, state agricultural representative for Senator Pat Roberts. “I am always impressed by MKC’s cutting edge philosophy regarding service to their members, and it is gratifying to see how their cooperative’s leadership regarding marketing, agronomic breakthroughs, member services and community service enhance the economic prosperity of their service area. Time at this event always gives me tools to better serve Sen. Roberts’ agricultural needs.”

Staff members in attendance were Judd Gardner, agriculture legislative assistant for Senator Jerry Moran; Mel Thompson, state agricultural representative for Senator Pat Roberts; Wayne Stoskopf, professional staff for Senate Ag Committee; and Jordan Kittleson, district representative for Congressman Tim Huelskamp.
